Position statement on extended roles for qualified PA(A)s PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 May 2010 00:00

The Association has issued the following recommendations for departments of anaesthesia wishing to train qualified PA(A)s in extended roles;

Association of Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia)
Recommendations on the training of Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia) in extended roles.
The Post-graduate diploma does not equip PA(A)s to undertake procedures other than those specifically outlined in the curriculum document1.
The APA(A) does however recognise that numerous departments of anaesthesia are training qualified PA(A)s in extended roles.
The APA(A) supports this cautious local development whilst making the following recommendations;

  1. Any training in extended roles should be instigated and delivered by the employing department of anaesthesia.
  2. There should be a documented practical and theoretical programme of training.
  3. The training programme must be approved by the local governance committee.
  4. A named consultant anaesthetist must assess the PA(A) as competent in the procedure and document the fact.
  5. The competence of the practitioner should be revalidated annually by the named consultant anaesthetist in charge of the training programme.
  6. The outcome of the procedure should be audited regularly.
  7. The PA(A) carrying out the procedure should be registered on the voluntary register of qualified PA(A)s held by the Association of Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia).
